I once replaced a starter in a vw jetta (not an easy task), only to discover that the car wouldn't start simply because the seat belt wasn't attached.
LMAO, we always look for reasons to get into another project

Hi guys! So I managed to order my phaser for around 220$ online and also ordered a vct solenoid just in case that caused the failure. If the vct goes usually it doesn't generate enough oil pressure for the phaser which in return usually goes.

First off let me start by saying this job was a SON OF A ..... If anyone has done that you know that obviously the valve cover, air breather and coils and all connections got to come off. My truck has a 3 inch body lift so that played to my advantage let me say the first 15 valve cover bolts were not to bad to get off from over the hood and the rest from the wheel well after taking the wheel well guard off. HOWEVER the 16th bolt at the very back was a pain, I couldn't imagine getting that off without a lift and having a 6inch sus lift on 38s for clearance. So After everything was off everything looked good for a truck with 280000 clicks. otherwise is was clean so I was happy. Now if anyone knows about the phaser its attached to the front of the camshaft, it attaches the timing chain to the sprocket that is attach to the cam. so to take that bugger of without loosing slack on the chain you need a "special wedge tool" After going to the ford dealer the wouldn't rent or order one in for me. I looked online and places wanted 150 $ and MORE. This wedge is apx 2inches in length so with a bit of ingenuity I made MY OWN hah just with a bit of soft wood and twine. It worked great and I can wait to show the ford dealership it and tell them to shove that up their you know what lol.
I did get the new one on, the only problem that I had was lining the sprocket pin in with the hole one the camshaft. They were off by a millimetre or so, so I had to use a pair of pliers and grip the camshaft enough to turn it bc there was no way to turn it by hand. I did use a cloth so it didn't damage or scratch it, you can never be to careful!.

Okay so after everything was back together and everything torqued (30lbs for phaser bolt then a 90 degree turn) I started to put everything back together. GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!

I DROPPED A BIT DOWN THE MOTOR, where the timing chain goes to the crank shaft! I was so mad and looked high and low for 2 hours and couldn't see it so I decided to put it back together hoping it fell to the oil pan so after putting the cover and everything on except the breather I took the pan off! That wasn't to had didn't have to lift the motor or drop the axle only the sway bar. Thank god for my lift haha

So 2 hours later after the pan was off there was no sign of the bit, so you can guess...Valve cover back off -_- I ever went to crappy tire and bought a inspection camera to see down got a great deal the camera was 299 on for 119$! So I was up at my dads shop for 3 hours looking for this bit and nothing so I was about to give up it was 1am, I was defeated and was just going to get a shop to take the timing cover off because that's a huge job. I took one last look and was in shock when I seen this bit hidden way back under the timing chain. I got it out with a magnet thank GOD that saved me thousands! So today I started putting everything back together just waiting on my oil pan to go on and sway bar then I'm good to go so hopefully everything goes well. Oh I forgot to mention it was mentioned when you do replace a phaser take the inside and outside roller lifter off on cylinder 5 and the exhaust on the 8th. I have a 3V 5.4. Ford also said id never get those back on without a special valve spring tool! I popped them back on with a flat head which wasn't fun AT ALL. Did no damage to the head or springs or anything.

What I learned was NEVER give up no matter what you are faced with in life no matter how hard your obstacle is. I'm 22 years old and never knew anything about any of this but after doing this myself with a help of a video I learned ALOT. Its very humbling and feels great accomplishing something like this on your own. Saves you a lot of money too hahaha sorry for going on! If anyone has any questions about anything feel free to ask!

Yes the sensor or the VCT variable camshaft timing solenoid will sometimes get the screens plugged up from dirt or whatever. It will cause that tho bc there isn't enough oil pressure to the phaser, I would still check your phaser it could be on its last leg or better yet done. There are pins that hold the spring and everything together and when they break they like to cause you that knock knock knock sound.. it likes to rattle around and like in my cause it will break. even after the knock the phaser will work, it could be for a day, year or months, but eventually it will go..
Good luck with everything though buddy
