Default to downsize to smaller tires or no...?

Alright fellas really need some input here. It's the classic aesthetics vs. realistic debate...I'm highly debating picking up a set of 275/70/18 Goodyear Duratracs with 95% tread left tomorrow and ditching my 34" Trail Grapplers...I love my Trail's but part of me wants some mpg's and power back that I lost...The price on the Duratrac's is a steal too...thoughts/input? am I crazy?

have at it. your Edge tuner will let you change the tire/speedo calibration, correct?

yep. I love the look of the big tires but I feel like they might be more than I truly need on the truck

Not to mention sucking up power, weighing more, and helping you go slower. I know its super awesome to put massive *** tires on the truck....here is some food for thought, years ago, Muscle Mustang did a dyno test on the new 3v GT and the effect of going with bigger rims, the cars lost 20hp be switching from OEM 17s to aftermarket 20s.

For 2 years i had 295/70R18 Nitto Terra Grapplers and i was getting 285 miles per tank at best. I took those off for the same reasons and because one of my suppliers was running a sale on the 275/70R18 Terra Grapplers and now i am back at 325 miles per tank. Another thing to look at though is the weight of the tires. I emailed Falken and Nitto a while back to look at my next set of tires and found this information interesting. A 305/65R18 Falken Wildpeak AT 8 ply weighs 20 pounds more per tire than a 275/70R18 Terra Grappler and is only the slightest bit larger. I could run a 35" 10 ply Nitto with less weight than a 33" 8 ply Falken.

Your Trail Grapplers weigh in at 71.65 pounds and the Goodyear MTR's would be 61.32 so there would be 40 pounds less weight to turn right off the bat.

thanks for the input! and actually i'm looking at the Duratracs, not the MTR's. and tirerack lists them at 55lbs/tire...so it'd be almost 60 pounds less total...hmmmm

Duratrac's are 56.2 but still that's a big difference in rolling weight.

I bought a lifted truck with big tires several years ago due to the aesthetics. It didn't take long for the reality to set in. Less MPG, less power, rougher ride and all the other non perks. Sure glad to be back to stock height and tires now. Can spend some of the saved $$$ on other things that improve performance and or looks.
