Default 2006 F150 Grinding Noise.

Okay I have a video on YouTube //m.youtube.com/watch?v=9KH_lrF0lqs
Anyway quick breakdown 2006 F150 Lariat 110k grinding started a month ago if I throw it in 4WD it goes away almost instantly. Any thoughts? It went away for a week and a half. This morning it did it 10+ times.

Do a search for IWE (Integrated Wheel Ends). The IWE Actuators at your wheel will likely be the grinding noise, you need to determine if the seal is gone on one or both of the IWE's, or you have a vacuum leak somewhere else (IWE Solenoid is common as well). Both of mine went on my 2005, my dad's went on his 2006. This is a very common issue and comes up quite often on this forum. I'll see tomorrow if I can find the link but there's a few others that'll likely throw it in there (VTX I think had one).

I can't quite tell in your video but it sounds like the actuators. Is it coming from one or both of the front wheels? The IWE Actuators though will make it go away putting it into 4x4 because what happens is in 2x4 you're using vacuum to pull the actuators in (disengaging the hubs) but with a vacuum leak it can't fully disengage so it grinds. Once you throw it into 4x4 you're locking the front hubs so no more grinding. If you find the IWE Solenoid under the hood and pull the vacuum hose off of it, if the noise goes away you know for certain it's in the IWE system. Pulling that line forces the hubs to lock (front-diff spins) but you can drive around in 2x4 as the transfer case is still in 2x4.

Thank you guys I did look it up and found that might be the issue Ford designed the truck so rain water drips right on it. Part of the reason I go out so fast but I did here are a couple guys is noise in there grinding seemed a lot different that's the only reason I was concerned. I drove the truck today again and it started making that noise immediately I put it in 4 wheel drive and it never came back. Maybe I should just go to manual locking hubs and I have to deal with this mess lol.

It's likely an easy fix, and definitely easier and cheaper than converting to manual hubs. For now, just unplug the electrical to the solenoid. That will lock in the front axle, but your transfer case will be unlocked still. It won't hurt anything but a little fuel mileage. It will keep the hubs and IWEs from grinding themselves into oblivion, though. Follow my link and diagnostic and you will get it fixed.

Had the same thing happen to mine...discovered a leak in the vacumn resevoir behind the battery replaced the part and had no problem since...I say do it sooner than later cause if you score the IWE's you will have to change them.

Definitely sounds like the same issue I had on my 07 Mark LT. The 4X4 light would also not illuminate on the dash when the switch was engaged. Dealer replaced the IWE solenoid and transfer case shift motor which fixed the problem.

Its under warranty I checked I looked at the solenoid and the vacuum line was partially off. Pushed it back on and now it won't make the noise good but they might not fix it if its not broke.

if the vacuum line was parttially off.... that was the problem. it was not allowing enough vacuum to pull your IWE all the way out... the noise you heard was a partial dis-engagement...when you select 4H it vent's vacuum and engage's...noise gone.
