TechRep mine took about 3.5 quarts.
you must have an after market diff cover..

My Haynes repair manual calls for "up to 5.5 pints" for the rear differential. Two pints to a quart is 5.5/2=2.75 quarts.
**Traction-Lock (limited slip) differential add 6.5 pints of SAE 75W-140 Motorcraft high Performance Synthetic Rear Axle and 8oz. of friction modifier XL-3 or equivalent when lubricant is changed.
6.5/2=3.25 quarts.

Default Doing Differential Service - Have ?'s

My '04 with the 9.75 LS took just under 3 quarts plus the XL-3. That includes the axle tubes since I replaced wheel bearing and cleaned out everything. I even checked the level a few times after driving since capacity specs said over 3 quarts.

Buy 4 quarts and the XL-3. Mix the XL-3 in with the second quart. Keep filling until it starts to leak out of the fill hole, then seal it up. If you need that 4th quart, then you have it. If you don't, then return it.

For anyone looking to do this, Amazon has the Royal purple 75-140W on sale for 15.99, free 2 day shipping if you have prime, that's pretty cheap

Ok, I did some work on my truck today. Focused on the rear first with the differential service. It took me quite a while, but it is now done.

Mine did in fact take 3 qts of Royal Purple including the Ford additive. The cleaning of the diff cover and prepping it for a new and fresh re-install took a while.

I then took a look at the front diff. I dropped the protective plate and started to analyze a plan of attack. Like someone noted, there are 3 bolts on the top of the diff. 2 of which will need to be removed using a long extension and through the front of the engine. The 3rd one is right behind something and is too tight to reach using a shorter socket even. Not sure what to do, but I will try to study this one out a little more.

After all of the work (as this was not all) today, I am beat.
