Default Dim Tail Lights

Hey guys,

I've got an 05 F150 with dim tail lights. Both tail lights are dim, but when I press the breaks they light up. I replaced the bulbs to get the exact same issue. I'm not quite certain where to go from here.

Thanks,
Mathew

When the lights are turned on (headlights and taillights) the tail lights are on dim, and when you press the brake they get brighter so the people behind you can see your stopping. The bulbs have 2 filaments, one for the tail light being on, and one for the break light

Any effects on the headlights? Can be the regulator, but with the tails only, possible bad ground.

Sounds like a ground wire to me, sockets go bad as well, can't say I have ever seen 2 sockets go bad at the same time, maybe one was bad before and not noticed then the other one went bad. I would check the grounds first though, probably the easiest thing.

I apologize for the slow response here, I got my wisdom teeth out today.
Yes, I opened them up and only one filament is stay on constantly and then will brighten when breaks are applied. I did not try the sockets because I figured both couldn't possibly go bad at the same time. As for the ground wire, how and where would I go about checking that? I will also pick up two new sockets.

To answer your other question, the headlights appear to be fine. I've never noticed a difference. It can't hurt to check the regulator anyway, how would I go about that?

X2 ..Seem like they're working fine. Look at another car and you will see the same action.

Well I bring this up because the other night I had a man IRATE with me when I got off the interstate, shouting and telling my to put my window down. Eventually told me I'm lucky I don't get pulled over with no tail lights...?

Maybe the old man shouldn't be driving anymore. I just have to throw that possibility out there.
