Default Different tranny issue.

I have read many threads about the slip yoke thud and I was wondering if anyone has had it happen at speed, not just from a stop? My truck has 83K on it and if I have to slow down say for a red light or something and it turns green, and if you are not easy on the throttle it will slip and make a thud sound as it gets back into gear. If you are easy on the gas, it does not slip. When my wife drives she makes it slip and thud frequently but I can get by without it happening hardly ever just by driving gently.
Also I have noticed if I am coasting you can kinda hear a whine as you coast down a hill or down to a stop. I don't have any idea but would a torque converter be a culprit or not? I figure I will just drive it till it quits but if it is something I can fix for less $$ than a new tranny I am all about it.
