on my 99 i had my differential bearing explode on me and i had that play plus a horrible grinding sound...mine were pressed on but the bearing fail ruined the third member bearing mounting surface so i had to replace the whole thing...hope you dont have the same problem

hmmm alright thanks, i found some tech installs and im hopping its not pressed in, i found a new bearing at krangen for 30 bucks and it looks like the bearing isn't pressed onto the axle shaft and it looks like its in the housing...

If you have an 8.8 rear axle its a "C" clip type axle. A bit of in and out play is normal on "C" clip axles. I would say if its more than 1/8" its too much.
Also, on "C" clip axles the bearings and seals are pressed into the axle tube and not the axle shaft.
