Obviously when you buy a vehicle and drive it for years, issues will come up. A poor design though is not something the end user should have to pay out the ***** for. This is one item that should have been a recall and replace not just a TSB.

BXK109,
Just because someone doesn't want to pay huge sums of money for a repair and has an opinion about it doesn't make them a douche, it perhaps make them a little conscious about the way they spend their money. BTW, most people with real amounts of money actually pay attention to the small amounts they spend. They may be called "penny pincher" but it allows them to spend the money on things that will matter. If it is in your means and wants to waste money, so be it, others may have a different opinion and may want to express it without adolescent name calling, if you can't maybe, http://ricerforum.com/ would be a better fit for you.

Yes, this is really crazy. I mean potentially this could be a like a $1000 spark plug change at some dealership. If every plug breaks which is highly unlikely, but just the thought of it makes me sick.

the reason its not a recall is beacuse its not a safety issue, all recalls are safety issues, i agree that ford should help out on this and make it like a standard service for a set price like 200 bucks or something and eat some of the cost

I had mine done by a dealer in tampa and it was only 360$ regardless the breaks. No extra charge. They also told me i didn't need new boots. Sorry your dealers are price gouging asses.

Not nice. Totally uncalled for. And from the look of your truck in your avatar, you're in the wrong section son.
And it's not exactly like Ford told everyone that bought one of these trucks that they would have to pay out the ***** for a plug change.
And I fixed your post.

Well I got a laugh from reading everyones stuff, and I appreciate all the help. I am in the military and the dealership here is usually really fair. They said they have broken a total of 4 the whole time they have been working on the F-105's around here. So if they come back to me that they broke 3 or 4/8 then I will know that they are full of sh** and they will have to fight to get their payment out of my credit card other than the $209.00. If one gets broke, then oh well, and next time after they get they nickel anti-lock on the plugs, I will give it a try.
Thanks everyone, and for the record, I think that suing Ford would be a little too much, but getting them to accept a fair $190.00 to change plugs and for every broken plug, Ford itself would pay the difference. I would go for it, sign me up!

Had the same problem and found the best deal. Shops dont want to be liable for mistakes made while installing new plugs. They need to be done a certain way. All the shops say i can cost me over 2000 in the worst case. Dealers know what their doing and will not cause more problems. I checked all the dealers in the area and they were all a little different. I got it for 300 plus 30 min charge for each plug that breaks. Their hourly rate is 129 but they discounted it because of the obvious problem ford refuses to recall. So 300 plus 30 min at 87 per hour charge for every plug that breaks. Good news is the new plugs are stronger and not supposed to break. So if you do it now your next tune up will not cost as much. I had 4 break off today. So 450 after tax is what i paid and it runs better. Id go around and check all the dealers for the best rate. All the shops charge the crap out of you because their not good at removing broken plugs and they can damage the threads because they have no idea what their doing.

I bought my 06 Lariat used (Thanksgiving 07) and I'm at 82K miles now. I had no idea the truck had this issue until wellafter I bought it -- OK, my bad, not enough research, though I don't know how soon the problem came to light. But as another post said - Ford didn't exactly make it public knowledge and warn purchasers of the engines either.
I've got friends who run and work as techs at a Chevy dealership so I understand the dealer viewpoint and I would not expect them to eat the cost of bad engineering, any more than I think I should. It's not my fault the plugs break, it's probably not the tech's fault if he follows the proper procedure - heck the procedure was developed only after the plugs began breaking. So it's unquestionably an engineering issue - a manufacturing defect.
Ford should do the right thing - establish a fair, flat fee for this job and enforce it across their dealerships. Then they should eat anything above and beyond.
Meanwhile, anyone in the Ark-La-Tex had their plugs changed and had good luck/price with the dealer? I've got no allegiance to any local dealer - got the truck from a Dodge dealer. And the one closest to me recently wanted to charge me $150 to change an antenna mount - a job that takes 5 minutes and the removal, replacing of 3 screws. Not like I'm gonna trust them!
