Then go back to the dealership armed with carmaxes offer what I did And they gave me what car max offered witch was like 2 and half or 3 grand more than there original offer. That's my advice to anyone wanting to trade in a vehicle.
What zip code was this in??? Or are you quoting the certified pre-owned price?

The clean ones are always on the lots with the typical super inflated prices.
You figure the trucks are on the lot for $18,500 so you could probably get it for $17,000 or $17,500. They'll go through your truck and probably make it as perfect as possible, so fix most body work, detail it, do a full tune up, tires, brakes, etc... so figure they're in it $1000-1500 after labor and parts. That leaves them a few thousand in profit, baring there's no issue with your truck they'll have to fix (trans starts slipping etc...) They have to make money too. Haggle a little but $14,000 sounds pretty close to a fair trade to me. The dealer offered the previous owner of my truck (04 FX4 70k miles) 10k for a trade so he sold in private party

I didn't enter a zip I just went off the basics I know about the truck having 20s being leather 68k miles Kelly blue book showed 18100 on trade or 21 on private sale And 23600 for suggested retail I know prices do very depending on location but that's about right for north Texas 4wd trucks here seem outrages in price. Dealers typically try to get your vehicle for 4grand less than they will sell it for not ask 4 more they'll ask 6-8 grand more than they pay for it... Just my 2 cents Carmax is just a matter of time there appraisels are free never hurts to see what they tell you.

*btw I used a super crew as the base on the Carmax idk of its a reg cab scab or screw*

There assesment of 14k is what's commonly known as a "starting point". Low balling you gives them the opportunity to come down a little more on the price of their truck and then during the negotiations, act like they're doing you a favor by upping the appraised value of yours. If they offer 14, chances are they valued it at 16,500 to 18,000. They'll turn around and put it on their lot with a "low mileage" sticker on the window and price it at $22k and then sell it for 19,500 or 20,000.

I worked in car dealerships for 7 years. I know the games.

Yeah that's a low ball offer. With the way this economy's heading, you may want to hold out for cash for clunkers 2.0 or some other gimmick in retail.
The retail market should be pretty cheap by February 2013... The Fed will be "stimulating" the economy creating artificial demand until the elections over.

The dealer has to make money off it. You aren't gonna get kbb value.

Most dealerships dont use KKB value for trade in anyways. They use Black Book value, which is wholesale pricing, also what the auction houses use as starting points a lot of times. Plus the dealership needs to make their end of the deal too, they arent in business to only make $200 a car deal, typically the salesmans commission is more then $200 a car deal. It sucks, but its reality. Shop around, I bet you will find someone to offer you more, but I will be real surprised if its going to be $3k or $4k more, probably $1k or $1.5.

Trade in value will just about always start 2-3k lower than private sales price.....but realistically they are the same thing because when u do a private sale u might get more money but when u buy something else taxes will just be taking that money right back....when doing a trade u save taxes on however much the give u for ur truck (hints u it's normally a lower number)....but with good haggling skills u can just about walk oit with anything u want
