Cruise control problem.
2004 SuperCrew 5.4
I go to engage the cruise control and sometimes it isnt even there. Green light wont turn on. Then it might turn on and set the speed only to go out in a few seconds. Seems as though something is preventing it from engaging and if it does it then bonks it out, maybe a sensor or something?

Yep, if you have LED bulbs installed without load resisters, this will kill the cruise.
Change the two rear taillight/brakelight bulbs if they are old. You may have a filiment on on of the brakelight bulbs that's burnt. The cruise "triggers" on the voltage drop of the brake lights when the pedal is applied. When the brakes are off, and you are cruising above 35 MPH, the cruise will activate.
Check the overhead cab brake light as well. Is that an LED replacement?

Well thanks for the info. I changed the brake lights and the overhead cab brake light, No luck. Cruise control still not working. It does not have a direct fuse for it, is there any other fuse I should check. I read somthing about the shift interlock switch being bad. What is that, and where is it on the truck. Thanks for the help.

I'll check my Ford Factory repair manual tonight. They provide a good troubleshooting proceedure for this kind of problem. I'll post Tuesday AM.
Since it was not the brake bulbs, I'd need to look at Ford's next step in the troubleshooting manual.

By any chance, can any of you guy put the truck in to gear without pressing down on the brake.
If so, then the cruse cortrol problem your having is do to a short in the brake shift sencer in the shifter unit. Normally when the sencer fails it fails closed preventing the truck to be moved into gear. But in some caeses for sure mime and possibly your it fails open allowing the truck to be used with no problems being noticed other then being able to shift with out pressing the brake and loss of cures control or sporatic allowance.
Fix for the problem. Replace the sencer. Dealer will replace the whole shifter unit if it's a truck with center consol shifter, so expect to loss some big bucks. If the truck is a dash shift then they should be able to replace just the sencer.
I know you can get the sencer from an outside company for the center consol shifting trucks if you want to replace it yourself. I have been talk to guy on the site that has replaced his shift sencer himself for other reasons, so I know you can do it. I'll dig up the info, if I can remember I think he shared the install diagram for it.

I fixed my 2004 F150 today it took some work. On the TSB it says to check the BOO signal with the engine off but in my case I had to run the engine and actually had to drive it and then the interlock switch actted up.Also my truck has a floor shifter. I included some pics of my bad interlock switch. The cruise control works great now
