Cruise control deactivation switch is at the top of the brake pedal on the side. It and the on off buttons are the only external sources of power for cruise. If the 3rd brake bulb lights check the switch at the top side of your brake pedal for proper operation. Of course make sure your fuses are good. The Vehicle speed sensor and the ECU run the operation of the cruise.

I removed the 3rd brake light bulb when I hooked up the lights on my new truck cap.. Cruise stopped working and I thought I must have screwed up something in the wiring harness. Had just booked to take into the Ford garage next week to diagnose when I saw your post. Put the bulb back in and now cruse is back. Saved me a lot of time and $'s. who would think that a light bulb out should effect the cruise control - stupid design!

Default 2006 F150 cruise control not working

I searched this sight, read many good tips. Here are my results. My cruise would not engage and diagnostic codes did not work. We noticed a post about third brake light and sure enough mine was out. $5 at the auto store and 10 mins later, we had the third brake light working. Headed down the road and cruise control now works like a champion. Thanks to everyone that posted their comments and tech tips. Very very helpful. I suggest you check this out first thing. It's the easiest, quickest and cheapest fix for me to date. Check your third brake light. If it is out and cruise not working, Ford has made this a "feature" to notify you to replace the bulb.

Seeing that this post is pretty recent, ill see if anyone has input for my weird truck. I've got an 04 Lariat with the floor shifter. Driving down the road with cruise on and it just suddenly quit on me. Didn't work for weeks and weeks. Then the past few days the weather has dropped hard and was really cold one morning. Everytime id tap the brake pedal, I could hear the switch engaging inside the center console attached to the shifter. It seemed louder then it should be. Tried my cruise on the way home, now it works? It was a short trip so I don't know how long it would have stayed on or not. So reading this, my 3rd brake light must be working because cruise worked. So I'm guessing maybe one of the two switches is going bad?

Hi I just had this same problem this morning with my 2006 F150 . The cruise control would turn on so. I checked my brake lights and discovered the right rear is out. Thanks for the info I'm going to start with that seeing how I leave Tuesday for vacation.

The fix for me was to clean and lube the brake switch 13480 in the following diagram:

Once I opened it, it was obvious that, at some point in the truck's history, a large amount of current had passed through the switch, charred the contacts, and melted some nearby plastic. Hope this helps.

BTW, Mine wasn't throwing any OBDII codes, either. I have an 06 screw with the 5.4 and 151k miles. It started out as an intermittent problem that became more persistent over the period of three months.

X2 I had this same problem.

Also another common problem which I had, check to see if you can shift out of park without pressing on the brake pedal. There's a switch that connects to the console shifter that goes out and affects the cruise control. Replace it in about 10 min and $50 for the part and you're back in business.

There is a common issue with the trucks that have the floor shifter.

Check and see if you can shift from park WITHOUT pressing the brake pedal. By default you need to press the brake to shift out of park. If you cannot it is likely the switch inside the console. I believe it is called the Brake Shift Interlock or something like that. If it is non functional your cruise will not work. It is a simple fix and relatively inexpensive.

Check that brake test first.

Just noticed that mavrik posted the same thing above me.

worked for me thanks
