Default Converter REPLACEMENT part? where?

2004 5.4l 3v 116,XXX miles
I need to replace my converters. I am not interested in gainning performance but simply getting the clogged cats off and replacements on. I have seen universal magnaflows online (have bend like factory upper cat) that are weld ins and complete bolt on kits on ebay (walker and federal for around $600 both sides). My question is has anyone tried the walker or federal bolt on kits? I want to make sure whatever I put on will work with my o2 sensors and not create codes or issues. $600 shipped for bolt on parts seems reasonable to me. $100-$200 for weld in converters also seems nice but local shops want another $150-$200 to put them on (thats assuming they will touch the cats). Anyone use a direct bolt on replacement kit (that isn't OEM) and how was the fitment and use? I need it to pass local inspections. Cutting them off or hollowing them out just isnt an option. I was going to get the universal magnaflow mufflers (curved ones) and simply clamp them in place until they could be welded but Im concerned the clamps may interfere with the o2 sensor ports as there isnt much room between the pipes/converters. Opinions? universal and clamp for now or just replace with a bolt on kit?

If price is no object, the same volume level is wanted, and your inspection includes a sniffer, the Walker or Federal will be the way to go. Personally I'd choose the Walker system. The Magnaflow universals will be much cheaper, but require welding to avoid leaks. A tune will also be needed for the best performance from changing how the gases pass the front O2 sensor going from 4 to 2 cats. Don't let the exhaust shops get too snippy about the cats, if there is a legitimate problem with them there is no way they can get in trouble for replacing them.

So will the universal magnaflows with the 2.5" in/out work? Im looking at the model with the bend that looks similar to our factory front cats. Im about to order them but want to verify they will work. Looks like I will need to cut them in right after the front sensors but before the rear ones and it looks tight.

Make sure the body is large enough to handle the heat of the 5.4L. What model are you looking at?

Those look good. Don't touch the front O2 sensors location, the rears can be worked around if need be.
