I have a K&N Cold Air Intake on my '04 Fx4 and it depends, it can increase I believe either 15-20 horsepower. Plus the filter is reusable and saves money in the long run. Just got to remember to check on it every now and then and clean it. Speaking of that, better clean mine!!!

The '04 F150 5.4L CAI, from I can see, can basically be improved by a "Gotts Mod", which I did, and didn't see any sizable improvement after the mod.

Beware of those snake oil salesman promising big gains, like 20hp, by making changes on a stock / or nearly stock engine using special (expensive) filters and such. The engine will only use what it needs for air flow and unless your filter is normally filthy, gains versus problems will not be on the plus side. Unless your engine is a heavy breathing, chipped, modified turbo'd or supercharged motor running a cam, headers and high flow exhaust, you probably won't see any big change over the Gotts Mod with a clean filter.

A low restiction filter only gets low restriction by allowing larger particles through the filter and catching them in oil applied to filter, but that oil has it's own problems if applied too liberally, which many folks do.

I've been using K&N type filters for years on Mitsubishi's, Nissan's, Land Rover's, Jeep's, and now my 08 F150 FX4. The one thing I highly recommend which I never see anyone hardly using is a "Pre Filter". I use one and it helps keep the bugs, sand, and dirt from getting inside the groves in the actual filter. The one for my K&N CAI on my F150 was less than $30.00 online.

It may cut down like 1HP, but it is well worth it and when it's time to inspect/lube/clean my K&N it's a very easy and quick job because the filter is much cleaner than running without one. If you don't want to spend $30.00 for the proper K&N fitted Pre Filter you can always grab one of the wifes pantyhose lol.
