Yes it is getting air from the fender. Not just air, but cold air. That K&N is going to be sucking air in from under the hood. Where it's hot. Hot air means less horse power. If you want a true cold air intake run piping down to the bumper opening. Straight to the intake. Obviously with a filter inline. Also dyno tests have been done with the factory airbox and the gotts mod. There is improvement. What K&N claims you'll add in horse power isn't true. For $12. I would probably put it on my truck, just for the simple fact of having a cleanable air filter instead of the throw away ones. But you will not gain horse power. If you believe you will and want to prove everyone wrong. Go get the truck dyno'd and post the results, before and after.

Didn't read it all and now I did lol. I would suggest getting a dry flow cleanable filter. The oiled ones like K&N I read can plug up the maf sensor. Plus the oil is a pain in the butt.

Old web myth. Only if you don't follow directions in cleaning and re-oiling. Many simply over oil them, which could lead to what you describe.

I ran with a K&N filter on my Harley for over 5 years, and two engines. My first 88 CI engine had 92K on it before I swapped it out for a 95 CI for more power. I used the same K&N filter, and oiled it at least 2 to 3 dozen times.

This^^^ Oiled filters only cause problems in the hands of the inexperienced. I used them years ago and never had a problem simply because I know what I'm doing

Well, at 28 I was a newlywed for the second time, at age 36 I met my third wife. Kinda explains the high mileage ehh? :whistling:
