Cluster swap revisited

You can find an XL cluster that came with a Manual transmission, that'll have the tach. Otherwise any of the lower level models will work, up to the FX4. I've got an FX4 cluster for $50 if you want to give it a shot.

I would imagine the engine would make a difference, because the 4.2 V6 and the 4.6/5.4 probably have different speedo and rpm ranges?
I would like to swap in one with a tach and add cruise control at the same time so I only have to get the dealer to flash it once.

... Bucko, did you ever try the FX4 cluster in your STX ? Or anybody else done it? I'd make that swap in a heartbeat if I would get the tach and still have everything else work too. Also you indicated the mileage could be "flashed" to indicate the actual vehicle mileage? By a dealer I suppose?

No difference. It's all electronic

2008 XL Swap
Ive read this thread, and searched the forums, I have a few questions still The truck I bought was a Automatic 2008 XL with manual windows 4.2 L. Its main duty will be a work truck, after that who knows what I'll get. But I just have to have a tach.
1. Do I have to get same year cluster to match my truck? I mean I think I understand that regardless of the year for FX4 cluster.. it would need to have the ASBUILT data pushed to it by a dealer to work 100%. Personally I just want to find a vehicle with as close mileage that will work, FX clusters are nice but after dropping 80-110 on a cluster I dont want to drop another 100 for a dealer to correct.
2.Does it really matter if one has manual or electric windows? I see these clusters on ebay, that have the tach, but it says XL/STX with electric windows.
3. If only late 2005 manual trans XL/STX will work, what is the model number? It was mentioned by Bucko twice, but I could not find the thread he talked about.
I found this site, that lists all clusters, and I searched the model numbers from 05 and 04 that were XL/STX http://www.usedspeedometers.com/sear...F150%20PICKUP/
The stuff I found all seemed automatic and not manual transmission
Thanks

Any cluster from a 2005 to 2009 will work to give you a tach; it does not matter about power windows/doorlocks, etc.
What the issue is when you swap tachs is the mileage (if you legally care), and the clusters "information center" display. The XL clusters from a manual transmission model are a perfect swap for a XL or STX with automatics, as this information center will display everything you display now (door ajar, etc).
With the FX2/FX4 cluster, its information center displays a whole lot more than just the simple reports that the XL/XLT/STX models do. It will be these additional displays that appear as "error". Also, the inside dome light operates differently with the FX4 cluster.
I simply bought an XL cluster with the tach. The reason I mentioned "late" was because the manual transmission was not available unto late in the 2005 year for the 4.2, so when buying a cluster, be sure its a 2006 or later XL.

Hi Bucko, we'll I'm definitely not trying to cheat anyone, my goal is atleast 2k in range of my truck. I've seen clusters on ebay that don't have a selecter area, the area is whitish where the gear selecter would be. I searched for f150's for sale that were manual, and the area doesn't look whitish, but looks same color as cluster face. Is that correct?

This would work fine. Your current shift indicator will unclip and you can put it in the new cluster.

Thanks for the reply, I was actually afraid it was that easy, (meaning any of the clusters I find like that are not manual xl/STX) Ive been trying to find a cluster that everything will work the minute I snap it in (door ajar, chime, cabin light etc) from what I've read and been told that can only happen with manual cluster which looks just like the xlt clusters from automatics.

Plenty of them for sale on Ebay; you should be able to get one close to your current clusters mileage too.
