No, I wouldn't discount your theory. I did take the time to do some extensive research on the oil viscosity because I too wondered that.
What I surmised from my research is that it's not the problem, but I might switch back for my next oil change just for the heck of it.
Although I do think for total engine life the 10w-30 is going to be a better oil in the long run (not going to meet CAFE standards). a 5w just seems a little thin for the 5.4 if you know what I mean.
I do a lot of towing of light boats (maybe 3000lbs) (not of heavy equipment)
Keep the thoughts coming, thank you.

So the Engineers at Ford got it wrong with the 5W - 30 ...hummm

Change your oil and filer. A loud fast clicking/ticking when I would accerate. I had the same trouble and I think it is fixed for now. I have a 1999 F150 4x4 and today while looking at my truck I decided to check the oil and it was low 1 1/2 quarts. I have changed all ball joint and front wheel bearings with no luck but the oil change did it. The low oil sets off some sensor that starts the clicking. I drive very little maybe 2,000 miles in 3 years, I never though of checking the oil and neither did my mechanic. Good Luck
thats weird, we dont have the same year and you have the exact same problem as me, real fast clicking or ticking when pressing the gas, does yours do it when you rev in park or neutral? i tried that and it will only tick/click when i rev and its in gear. let me know if you find the solution, im stumped

I have a 2006 screw 4x4 with the 5.4. I was pulling a snowmobile trailer a couple weeks ago about 400 miles one way, and about a 100 miles into the trip i heard a ticking noise and my heart sank lol. Sure enough i crawled underneath and the driver side manifold has a hair line crack right between the last two ports. Expensive little fix if you dont have warranty

Loud fast clicking when I excelerate. Well, the oil change didn't work. I had a recall on my 1999 f150 4x4 and asked the mechanic and he said it was an exhust leak, $700.00 fix. I check youtube on how to do it and they made it look really easy. They must have been working on a 1955 F100. I can't even see my exhust manifold. Let me know If you come up with anything else. My clicking noise seem to have started one day when I closed my hood pretty hard.

Same problem with ticking noise
Interesting to see some of you owners have a ticking noise with the earlier 2000 F150's. What is weird, I'm having the same issue with my 2012 with the ecoboost. I only have 3000 miles on it and thiis ticking noise began recently. It sounds more like a static discharge like you get when you get an electric shock. This only happens when the engine is warm. Every time I touch the eccelerator light or heavy, I get two or three of these ticking sounds from underneith the truck. No other ecoboost owners I've talked to have this problem. The only thing I can think of is that it may have to do with the exhaust moving when eccelerating.

I just discovered that my passenger exhaust manifold is leaking and causing this ticking sound. Just wondering what people have used, Tasca has a Ford one for $115 and gaskets for $10, and a NAPA one is $117 and comes with new gaskets, nuts, and studs.
What is the best manifold to replace it with, a new factory Ford one or another brand like NAPA?

Clicking Sound - Check IWE System
I had the same problem with my 2005 5.4L, Several times in shops and I finally found someone willing to dig a little. The problem was in the IWE System. A quick way to check this is to see if noise goes away when you switch to 4WD. I ended up replacing 1 check valve and both axle actuators - problem fixed. check out this link: m.f150online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=371599

It's my first day
Same thing
I have the exact same problem. I just bought a used 2010 XTR. I knew about the noise but got it anyway. It's the exact same noise and conditions you described. It only can be heard under load (in gear) at low speed. At first I assumed it was the Cam Phaser given the high rate of failure on those; however, I can't replicate the sound with the truck in idle.
The most rusted worn out part in the truck is the manifold (Alberta truck). I'll inspect it closely this weekend.
Thanks F150 forms!

I have the same tick everyone else is talking about. I have a 2006 5.4 with 110k on it. After reading multiple threads on the same issue, I'm pretty sure it's the passenger side manifold that's leaking. Mostly because there's black soot on the manifold. I've been putting it off for a few months now because of the cost to have someone do it and also the pain in the a** it seems to be to change it out yourself. I think I'm just going to install all new exhaust (long tube headers, high flow cats, mufflers), once I save up enough money.
Edit: Just realized this thread is over three years old, haha!
