Default Classified ads in technical forums

Many classified ads have begun to appear in this technical forum in the past month. Most by new members. While the new members are told they cannot post classifieds until they have the correct post count or member length of time, they ignore this and post classifieds in the technical forums to bypass this rule.

The moderators delete these ads when we see them, and/or when they are reported to us as soon as we can.

I have requested that the sign up rules get changed so that it is clearly stated that if a new member posts a classified ad in a technical forum, they will be suspended for 7 days. It is my opinion that many of the new members are aware of the rules and post the ad anyway in hopes that they sell their item before the ad is deleted. Some have even been bold in stating they are knowingly violating the rule, and post anyway.

I like your solution Bucko.

I ran into this problem when I first signed up on another forum and I ended up being "banned" from the forum for posting an item for sale.

Quite frankly, I think it's important to recognize that many people don't read the rules of a web site. I've been using computers since the mid 80s and can't even imagine how many sites or software programs I have signed up with throughout many those years. Not once (just imagine that) have I actually read the page of rules/guidelines/requirements that precede the "I Agree" check box. I think it's fair for any prudent person to assume that people just don't read those things.

So, your approach of a suspension vs. a ban is a good solution.

My two cents.

While I too have "agreed to terms" without reading them to install software, it does not exclude me from the rules. I chose to agree when I clicked the box. If I break a rule, then I accept the consequences.

For those that follow the rules, it's unfair to those that break them.

my $.02 as a recent violator of this rule (which I admit I did not read the rules when I signed up, but am responsible for them) I was VERY turned off by the accusation that I was doing something BAD/WRONG. And while you might not care that is fine, but I think we might turn valuable contirbutors sour on this site. I had simply finished performing the plug change and wanted to let people know 1. they can do it, and 2. if they wanted the used tools cheaper than what I paid they were available and to PM me. My thinking was that the restrictions were in place to reduce spam (which I stated, but obviously did not matter) not reduce the amount of people helping people, which is exactly why i came to this site in the first place... In hindsite, I don't mind waiting another week before posting the items for sale as I don't need them to sell or anything.

I really thought I was potentially helping someone out...
