Checked my FPDM.
After reading all the posts about the FPDM's rotting away I decided I would just order one and put it on so I wouldn't have to worry about it. I'm glad that I did for a couple reasons. When I went to lower the spare tire my key would not unlock the stupid lock for it. I sprayed it with WD-40 and wiggled the key around tapped it a few times with a hammer.... still nothing. I ended up taking a screwdriver and a hammer and just tapping it on the backside and turned the lock that way. I'm glad I found that out before I was on the side of the road with a flat.
The FPDM was definately bad... Lots of corrosion. I scraped the corrosion off and there was a nice little hole. Thanks for all the info posted on the board about it... it definately helped me!

That looks like mine did aswell. My plastic was cracked and nothing was sealed. I had that much corrosion too. My spare tire lock was also stuck so I just bent the tabs on the backside and removed it. That would suck to get a flat tire on the 30 km gravel road to my cabin with no cell reception.
My trucks an 06 with 139,000 km (86,000 miles). I'm not sure what difference it made when I changed the FPDM as I also did the spark plugs at the same time.

it happens to the best of us....( a.k.a ALL of us ) lol but good thing you jumped the gun on this one. i have an 06 with just over 236k on it now and i had to replace mine a month after of buying the truck in february. needless to say mine fell in HALF when i pulled it off adn i had a good inch or 2 of salt and corrosion in there.
While it was off i rockerguarded my entire frame before i put the new one back on with the spacers!
Good luck

Amazon has aftermarket Dorman brand PN#590-001 for $54.43
I think the OE part number is 4L3Z9D370A, 5L8Z9D370A. Here is another good write up.

Now I want to check mine.... just as preventative maintenance lol. So I just buy the new one from dorman, plug it in and it just works as intended eh? (obviously installing it along the way :P)

Ya, just unplug, unscrew the old one and throw it in the garbage after taking pictures to post on here hahahah. Then you install the new one and plug it back in. The new one will have spacers that keep the back of the fpdm off the frame to separate the dissimilar metals which caused the corrosion in the first place.
