Check Engine Light - Can't Smog - Help
Well I have been driving without current tags for a month now!
I paid the tags, but can't get a smog test.
2005 XLT 4x4 5.4L with only 49K miles.
I have an Edge tuner and just before getting it smogged got a Knock
Error. I cleared it, but it takes a big ride to get the truck computer
to get data. Now I get Knock error (#1) before it gets enough data.
I went to Vegas last week on business. Reset the error many times.
So, it has really gotten a lot worse. I used to see the error a year ago
maybe 2 times a year.
Even though it always passes smog, in Ca. they won't even let you test
it if there is a Check Engine Light or the computer says not ready.
If you disconnect the battery, you have to wait for the computer to
get data.
I tried octane booster, but the truck seems to run as always.
So how do I know if there is a Knock or if a sensor is bad?
It is coming so fast after reset, I think the sensor is bad?
I know the sensors are a big job to replace, there are 2 of them
under the intake manifold! May be a $1000? I don't really
want someone to take the whole top of the engine apart?
What if they do all that, they still don't know if they fixed the problem
until I drive all over the place?
I have never done the plugs or wires, but got the stuff to do it.
Anyone have any ideas or any information (video) on doing the Knock
sensor replacement?
HELP, I know I am going to get a ticket some day soon!

Sounds like you need to replace the knock sensors. Just bite the bullet. Wish I had a better answer but I don't know if there is one. If your engine is detonating bad enough for the the sensor error to be real, then you'll probably blow up the engine pretty soon unless you fix the problem.
