Cheapest place in the country to get a 4x4?
#11
Down south likes to jack up the prices on 4x4 trucks though since they don't stock as many. Yeah you'll have rust from the ones up north but that's where they will be the cheapest. Texas direct auto does have a lot of trucks! I've read bad reviews about them but no experience with them personally. Good luck with your search!

Thank you everyone for your sincere and helpful replies - they are much appreciated. I actually have looked at a few from that Texas place. The search continues.

Buying out-of-state
Be sure you research everything before you go out of state for a purchase. Happens I bought my truck (07 Scab 4x2 heavy half) 2 years ago in Calif and I live in Minnesota. In my case I spent alot of time checking prior to purchasing. I had to pay Calif sales tax and license fee even though living here, Minnesota will credit up to the state sales tax but anything over that is wasted and not credited.
Emissions on my truck are different than other 49 due to an extra cat, but otherwise the same.
Mechanicals are otherwise the same (per Ford) and 3-36 warranty which was still valid transferred automatically with the truck, not the owner though extended warranties had some transfer costs with them.
In my case I drove it back from L.A. to Minn for alot less than the cost of shipping it home. Took a few days but it was a scenic drive and I had a chance to check everything out long before the bumper-to-bumper warranty ran out.
Be sure to talk to your insurance company also - make sure you're covered whether you drive or transport it, some may not without prior notice. If you transport, make sure what is and isn't covered while in their possession.
Can it be done - yup, was it worth it - yes in my case because I got the truck I wanted, could there be headaches without proper research - absolutely. Do your homework and it most likely will work for you.
