Default Changing only oil filter?

I have decided that I need to change my oil filter to a good ol motor craft filter. I have a royal purple filter now (because it was free) and every morning I get the rattle can sound for a couple of seconds. I don't remember my truck making that sound unless I left it sitting for over a week. My question is does anyone know, from experience or other, how much oil I will lose?

Each engine has a different size filter. You didn't say which engine, but I'll assume 5.4L. And some extended life filters are larger than the stock. It will at least be a half a quart, but probably close to 3/4 of a quart.

Run Motorcraft and only Motorcraft if you ask me. There are valves in them that prevents your issue.

Motorcraft and Bosch filters both have the silicone anti-drainback valve.
Fram and other cheaper filters use cardboard. Stay away from the cheaper ones.

5.4L engine with the standard size filter. I do run motor craft and typically a motor craft filter but like I said the royal purple filter was free so I gave it a shot.

I'm not sure what RP makes theirs from...not saying it's a bad or good filter, just that you should keep that in mind when buying a new one. The computers at parts stores will say if the filters have a silicone valve or not. If they say nothing, assume it's paper.
MC and Bosch clearly state on the screen, "with silicone anti-drainback valve" or something similar.

So just to recap so far one person says I will lose no more then 3/4 quarts of oil by removing the filter. Does anyone second that?

since you can't buy 1/2quart or liter, just buy 1 quart or liter of whatever oil is in there right now and top up as necessary using the dipstick. The motorcraft filter is listed as 400ml or almost 1/2 quart.

Yes thank you I know it's sold by the quart. I have half a quart in the garage and wasn't sure how much more I'd need, that's why the question. When I remove the filter during an oil change oil seems to just keep coming out from the engine. I always assumed that it was in fact for the engine and not just the filter.

Change the filter then check the oil level then that will tell you how much oil to re-add.
As long as the level is in the hash marks your fine.
