Default Change tranny/diff fluid before or after the tow?

I am sitting around 85k miles. I plan on getting the fluids changed in the diff and tranny (flush too) on my next oil change. In about 2.5 weeks I am hauling a tractor to my Dad from near Cleveland, Ohio to NW of Chicago. The trip will be around 450-500 miles.

Should I get the fluids changed before or wait till after and beat up the old stuff? I bought her used so I don't know how hard she was driven or anything. Everything runs smooth though and I don't see any reason why things weren't kept up to snuff.

Change before, esp. the tranny fluid. Let the new stuff keep your internal components as clean and lubricated as possible.

I'd say change it before. How big is the tractor?

It isn't really big. Will be renting a UHaul trailer to take it out there. http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/1/1/113-john-deere-650.html

I just figured since it wasn't due till 90k that I'd do it after and not bake the new stuff right off the bad. Then again, it is a good point that I don't know when it was changed or if it had been changed.

Before. I changed my trans before I hauled my 72 chevy cross town and was so glad I did. With the highway overpasses every 1/4 mile, the truck stayed Tach'd at 3k minimum, up the big overpasses, 4500 SCREAMING... Glad I changed the oil and the diff oil too...

just makin your first trans flush @ 90k? I'm already past my second and I only have 80k. I go every 35k or so and then change... just me being overly cautious i guess.

Maintenance schedule calls for it every 30k miles. I have only owned it since 79k miles.

I am getting it flushed before. The more I think about it it just seems like a better idea.

Tranny fluid life decreases with heat. Heat produced by towing, stop and go driving, etc. The more severe the duty, the more frequent the fluid changes.

An instance similar to this nipped me in the rear years back. I changed the tranny fluid and the thing started dripping. It was one of those instances where I shoulda just left it, but oh well. The truck had a lotta miles on it. I agree with the others tho. Get the oils done now and it will be a relieving peace of mind while you're towing.
