Change Clutch Pack or Upgrade to Truetrac
OK, so I am experiencing the rear chatter in my 08 F150. It has 114k on it. I changed the diff fluid and added the friction modifier and still chatters My mechanic doesnt touch rear ends. I called around and also called the dealers to replace the clutch packs. I am getting quotes between $800 and $1000 to do the clutch packs. I then started doing research on the TrueTrac. I am thinking of just biting the bullet and getting the truetrac which will help with my beach traction. I am also towing a 6800 pound (dry weight) camper on the beach as well. I got a quote for $1210 installed all new bearings etc... I think that is fair. Any thoughts???

My differential side carrier bearings are going bad and making noise. I'm searching for someone to replace all the bearings and seals in the rear end and install a TrueTrac with a crush sleeve eliminator kit. I've gotten quotes for $740 - $775 for labor so far. Parts are going to cost $900+. It's not cheap, for sure. In my case, the stock differential is open, so rebuilding to get better traction is not an option. I really want the TrueTrac, but one mechanic I talked to said they were noisy. He said he's installed 2 and both were removed by the owners not long after because of the noise. I can't help but think that he's doing something wrong or somehow got 2 defective units. IIRC, these are the same type of differential used in the military HMMWV. I drove those for years, they were fantastic in the snow and mud, and we never had any noise out of the differentials.

All of my research has shown the TrueTrac to be very quiet. I guess my price $1200 isnt that bad then. I was hoping to just replace the clutch packs for $600. I cant find anybody that will do them that cheap. Thats why I am thinking to just cough up the extra dough and go with the locker...

You can replace the clutch pack on your own in the driveway for tge price of a new clutch pack, tube of permanent gasket, and new fluid. You do not have to remove the diff to replace the clutch pack.

Is it really that easy? I think book time is like 4-5 hours and rear ends make me nervous.

Yeah it is that easy. Getting the S spring in and out is the hardest part. I think I did mine in about 2 hours and that's working with 4.30's which leaves a lot less of a window to work with.
