Default Good ole' P0012

Hello all,

I have a 2005 5.4L with 103K miles; I have owned the truck since new and have always performed oil changes with no more than 5K intervals. I use Valvoline 10-30 Synthetic with Motorcraft oil filters. I have been fighting the P0012 (bank 1 over-retard) issue. I have replaced bank 1 and 2 VCT solenoids, and cam position sensors. The code clears for a couple of days and reappears. There has been no driveability issues and no new engine noises. I took the truck to the local dealer and had them scan it. They scanned it only (they didn't pull valve covers or timing cover) and came back with a broken chain guide on bank 1, and they could fix it for $1500. Thanks, but no Thanks.

Does a broken chain guide sound plausible, with no chain slap noise? I'm thinking a tensioner or phaser especially after reading many of the posts on this issue. If you can offer any advice or recomendations I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
BBF150.
