Default Should I be concerned about a high mileage 2007?

Pretty much what the title states. I am trying to upgrade my '99 F250 light duty Supercab to a newer crew cab. Ideally I would like an '09+ but I am considering 07-08 to save some money. Found a super clean 07 but it has 156,000 miles and he is saying he's firm at $13,300. It's a lariat with 6.5' bed. Pics look good, it's 2 hours away. I'm just not sure if I want to go with the 07 vs a newer model. I am cost conscious but I also keep my trucks 6-8 years so part of me wants newer. However I only drive 5-6k miles a year so it won't rack up a ton of mileage on my watch. I just don't want to buy a truck and then have to do all the high mileage maintenance either. I'm not sure what that sweet spot is as far as year/price/mileage to find the truck I want. '09+ seems to jump up in price quite a bit. Thanks for any advice.

i'd have a look at that 5.4 but if the truck is well cared for, she'll likely do you fine. even if you need a few repairs, as you say you'll spend that on a newer truck anyway

I was really hoping to get into a truck with at least the 6-speed to help fuel economy and even the newer 5.0. But now that I am shopping I'm just not sure I want to spend that much money. What is the service life of the timing chain and components on the 5.4?

My '05 5.4L has 211k on it. No problems.

How many miles do you drive a year? 15K? If you assume that a truck will last 200K miles, if you buy a truck with 156K, then it would only last about 3 years.

An 09 isn't ideal, as it's the first model year. As someone with an 04, another first model year, they can have quirks that take a while to get fixed.

In general, you should be a little scared of the 5.4L engine (I am) - you never know how a used engine has been cared for. I'd be okay with an 08 5.4L, as they made improvements to the 5.4L over time. For everyone who has a 5.4L at 211k, there's another guy replacing timing chains or the entire engine at only 100k...buyer beware.

No, what's more important is who owned it and whether they maintained it correctly. Not sure if your 2007 is affected by the spark plug issue but my 2006 was.

I bought mine about 15 months ago with 157K miles. I made sure that the plugs had been done and they were at $800. I paid $10.5K and it's loaded with all the goodies.

Since I bought it I've probably put on around 8K miles. Here's a list of what I've had to fix.

1) Cylinder 1 misfire. Turned out to be just a bad plug
2) Left 4wd actuator.
3) New tires. Pull off's from a new Tundra. Michelin LTX at $350
4) Changed the fuel filter
5) Serviced the a/c
6) Replaced the front OEM grill

7) Dropped the pan and changed the transmission filter
8) Need to change the differential oils and transfer case oil still

So ask the seller about the maintenance especially the plugs and what kind of engine oil. I only use Mobile 1 full syntheric. 5W-30

Can't say I would pay 13k for a 2007 with 150k+ miles tho. Even if it was mint

Yeah the 5.4 makes me a little nervous too. I have one in my 99 and was looking to get away from it in my next truck. Not sure what changes were made to the engine since my model year, if 07 had the same changes they made in 08? Ideally I would like to find a clean '10 5.4 or '11 5.0 but price wise they are a little more than I want to spend with 75-100k miles. And lower mileage 07-08's are pulling the same money as higher mileage 09-10's. I bought my truck with 92k miles and it's been great, no major issues. But I need more room for the family and want to get rid of it before it does start needing stuff.

The seller of the 07 has only had it 2 years and said he has only done tires, brakes and oil changes. He's put about 30k miles on it. Before that he said it was owned by an older farmer, who knows if that's true. I think I can go up to $20k all in, maybe a little higher, for the right truck but with so many different years, engines mileages available in that price range it makes picking the right truck difficult. My requirements are crew cab, 4x4, 6.5' bed, tow package. Everything else I am flexible on.

I agree with you and I would be more comfortable around $10-11k but KBB list this thing at $15k private party value and the market is backing up those higher prices.

With that budget, i would look hard to find something 2009 or newer. I wouldn't be scared of the 5.4, but it sure would be nice having it backed up to a 6-speed transmission. Especially if you plan to do any towing. Even if it means an XLT over a Lariat I would still pick the newer truck just to get the transmission.

The 5.4 has its problems, but overall it is a very stout engine backed by a robust cooling system and is a great choice for towing.
