Unhappy Can't diagnose whistling sound consistent with wind speed.

Hey everybody,

I have a 2004 F150 Regular Cab, 4.6L 2V, 4x2, 3.55:1 Limited Slip Rear. Mods are K&N Filter and Gotts Mod. I also have a Pendaliner drop-in. I've thoroughly searched the forum for this particular whistling/high frequency sound problem, and haven't been able to find a thread regarding a sound consistent with wind speed.

At about 110-120 km/h [roughly 70 mph], I can hear a high-pitched whistling sound. Even though it's not super loud, it's really annoying. Hard on the head, and it even makes my ears pop. Throttlebody's spotless - cleaned it a few months ago. It's not the K&N filter - I swapped the old one back in and there's no difference. I don't think it's the alternator - I loaded up the electrical system, and it didn't make a difference. It's not the rear diff - shifting into neutral at speed doesn't make a difference, and neither does RPM. The sound does get louder (but remains roughly the same pitch) if I speed up from 110 km/h, or if a gust of wind hits the truck.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe the perimeter of your windshield.

Sounds like the alternator bearing...had same problem for years, only occurred when cold temperatures below 40 F or so...Ford dealer never could diag. found problem mentioned somewhere on line......recently had alternator replaced ...no more whistle.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I'll start taping some stuff off and making highway runs to try and track it down. Will post results.

I was originally thinking that may be it too, because I do have the typical cold weather whine until the engine warms up - which I'm ignoring for now. Temps here in Ontario are still around 10*C [50*F] right now. This whistling that I'm talking about is louder than that, and it doesn't make a difference how much load is on the electrical system.

Taped off the cowl end pieces, certain parts of the cowl, top and bottom of the windshield, sides of the windshield, the side mirrors, the wiper blades, even the damn bottom 2 holes in the license plate. The sound is still present and unchanged. I have no clue.

What about the weather stripping around the doors and side windows? Just a shot in the dark, to be honest.
