Default "Is it Cam Phasers?" video to explain it all

Hi everyone,

When I got my F-150 I had a lot of confusion about cam phasers and what problems they have. When I went online looking most videos were either gone or lacking details. As time went by I spoke to more mechanics and owners and was able to diagnose my phaser noise. Now, I have produced a video that I hope will help all new or prospective owners to both diagnose and understand cam phaser knocking. Here it is!

I hope you all enjoy it!

Thanks.

That's a great video! Should be stickied. I have a slight ticking, but nowhere near that loud on my 07.

How long has your guys been ticking. Bought my 2010 4.6 3v with 114k and noticed the ticking after warm. I put some 0 30 full syntactic in and about 3k later and it seems to be getting quieter.

No problem. I figured there needed to be a more definitive guide to this on youtube.

Here's another really good video explaining how the system works.

Great video, stcolorado. Definitely same exact sound I've got going on in my 07.

And fx4st, great find on the cam phaser replacement video. Definitely a job I'm going to be doing in the relatively near future (as soon as my wife let's me have the time and money to do it of course).

I do have a question or two that hopefully someone knows the answer to. Does the cam phaser issue in these engines cause stalling in situations like fast food drive through and tight turning at slow speed and low idle? And then next question is, are the new cam phasers designed differently to prevent this problem from happening again after I replace them?

If it is just knocking, no. Possibly if they are failing. The problem with these trucks is that our oil pressure gauges are dummy gauges. So you either have pressure or you don't. A lot of people with stalling have reported that the chain tensioners in the timing chamber broke free. This can cause pieces of plastic to clog the oil pump filter and give the engine low oil. Not saying this is your exact issue but it seems to be the most common when people stall, low pressure somewhere in the engine causing a safety shut down. Newer phaser designs came out in 2007, while they seem less prone to failure they still will eventually knock. The only way to stop knocking for good is to throw a lockout kit into them during replacement. Mostly an audible issue.
