Default Cam lockout questions?

Hey guys I have 2004 f1 xlt with 166,032 miles and I just want to know if there's a was to tell if I have a cam lockout, I bought the truck last year and I just want to know if the previous owner ever had the dreaded knock and I don't fell like opening the valve covers , now I have a tick but I can't tell if it's the injectors or the cam, IV put a flat screw driver to hear it and dosent really sound bad so I think it's the injector noise which it always loud, I dought there's is a way to check without opening but dosent hurt to ask

I don't know of specific a way. When the phasers are locked out, the truck has to have a tune for the pcm though. If you don't have a tune, and the check engine light is off, then I'd say no.

Do you have more low end or top end power? If it still has a lot of low end torque (chirping tires and throwing you back in your seat each time light goes green) then it still has cam phasers. If you have more power in the top end (roughly 2,700-4,xxx rpms) then it has lock outs. This is all assuming you have 5.4 motor.

Well when I step on it that **** is a tank taking off not very fast, but on the highway if I give it some gas it gets up there, so idk I have a 2004 xlt 4x4 with 3.55 gears and 2.5 leveling kit with 18 rims and roughly a 31 inch tire so I know I lost Getty up power well I guess I'll pop a cover off, and does the ticking noise of the phaser get loud when the truck is warm and I hear a ticking at idle
