Default To c.a.r.b. or not to c.a.r.b. ?

I have a '05 f-150 that I bought in NJ in '07. I brought it to CA and registered it in '08. I was curious if I have to put c.a.r.b. compliant catalytics on it when they go bad. I want to replace them with magnaflow, but they only supply 49 state legal. I know if I live in the state of CA I'm supposed to put super expensive c.a.r.b. cats in, but there is nothing out there in stainless. Can I get away putting 49 state legal on my truck, and not get busted. The smog guy never looks under my truck when he smogs it.

I'm almost positive that's it's a no. The CARB certified cats filter more stuff, I'm pretty sure, so he would see when he tests it that the cats aren't rights. You really don't need stainless in CA, just paint it if your that worried about it rusting.

Only thing about non CARB compliant installs would be no reputable shop in CA is going to install "illegal" items and if you install yourself and during an inspection obviously it would get noticed. I haven't messed with my cats for the sheer fact that I am in Cali and don't want to bother with extremely expensive CARB legal ones.

stone roots, I laughed for about a good minute before I had to explain why it was so funny to my girlfriend. I live in LA county. The reason I asked that ? is that I have a nasty leak on my stock exhaust manifolds. I want to install headers on my truck, and might as well replace the cats with mandrel bent stainless cats. Thanks everybody for your replies. I just bought an edge cts programmer if any of you want input.
