Default Should I buy 04-08 F150?!

Hello F150 lovers,

I hope this post finds everyone in here happy and enjoying life. My name is Moe and I am new to this forum. I have never registered in a forum but this one.

Here is the deal guys. I am tried of my Jeep grand Cherokee! I want to let it go and buy an F150 but I am afraid as hell. Reading all the discussions and complaints about how junks those 04-05 F150 models, makes me wonder and think twice before buying. I really do like the new ones but I can't offer them. So I think I will stick with 04-05 models. So should I go ahead and get one of these or not? Please consider that I am a student and I CANT offer a tranny or engine rebuild I do not want to buy a headache. But I am not suer if it is "headache" or not! I need some input in this. And yeaah all those I found has 100k+ miles on them! Is this a big deal or not? and what would a 12G buy me these days? I like the ext. cap or crew cap! Please help me and thanks in advance.

You have to take what you read on here with a grain of salt. theirs basically only two types of posters on this forum, guys who do modifications or guys that have something broken. So it seems that all 04-08 f150s have issues but in reality most are good trucks you just read about the bad ones. To answer your question the 2 main issues with that gen f150s are 5.4 cam phasers going bad and the 5.4 breaking spark plugs when they are being changed. but the other two engines 4.2 and 4.6 are very reliable engines. I have a 08 4.6 with 65k miles on it now and the truck is great, I haven't had any issues with the truck at all. the only things i've done to it are the usual maintenance stuff like oil changes, brakes and etc.

And welcome to the forum

Thank you for the info. So should I just go ahaed and get 4.6L engine and run from the 5.4? I do not need the big engine in fact. I want the truck to go around town and to go to school thats it. And do you know how much these worth now? and is over 100K miles a big deal or I should careless about it? Thanks

I've got the 5.4 in my 07 with just over 140,000 miles. No problems as of yet (knock on wood) other than breaking one spark plug. I've got a bit of a tick though but it isn't causing problems right now and I can't afford to fix it right now. I love the truck though. The 5.4 has a throaty sound if you put exhaust on it and plenty of power. And it's hard to say value. It depends on multiple things such as engine, super cab, super crew cab, how well it's been taken care of, and accessories. kbb is your friend and you should use it religiously when looking. I managed to find mine from a dealership for 2-3K below that value. I got a steal on mine 3 years ago paid about $14,500 for a 07 supercrew with 108,000 miles. And people are running the original motor at 300K I believe. It's all based on maintenance, driving habit, and a little bit of luck.

07-08s go for 11K up... 04-06 go for 7-16K.. It all depends on the trim, also if u didnt already know Fx4s lariats and KRs only have the 5.4

If u really dont tow the 4.6 is a good engine, not very fast and kinda lacks power imo

Don't freak out with the complaints. I have an '04 that has been nothing short of perfect. If I were to sell it, the buyer would be getting an absolutely awesome truck.

Trucks generally come in two flavors...those that have been ridden hard and those that have been babied. If I were looking to buy a used one, the only ones I would consider were those that were OBVIOUSLY well taken care of. They're out there, you just have to be patient and look, look, look. There are plenty of guys that don't tow, smoke, have kids, off road...garage the thing, keep it washed, freak out if the oil looks dirty.

Being picky and patient usually pays off.

I owned a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and despite the millions of negative comments from lots of people.... I had very good luck with it. That being said, I have owned three F250's. a 1999, 2003 and 2006. All had the 5.4 Triton engine. I put over 200,000 miles on each truck with minimal issues. I now own a 2007 F150 with 50,000 mile on it and could not be happier. I trust that it too will go 200K+ miles. I say go for it and don't look back

It's all about maintenance. No matter the vehicle, but prolly the 5.4 in particular, the more verified maintenance done, the better the deal. I have a receipt for every oil change, tire rotation, you name it. I don't plan on ever selling, but if I did, the buyer would pay a premium (as they should) and it would be damn worth it, IMHO.

Like the other folks said, be diligent and persistant. It'll pay off.
