Buy new ? Or fix the old girl up ?

when you buy used, you're just buying someone else's problems.

I didn't say not to buy used. I inferred that buying used could cost you more money than just the price of the vehicle. My 06 F150 was bought used with 129k miles. It required a bit of spit shine to get it back proper as did my 07 Expedition EL bought at 99k miles. I always have my mechanic go though them at that mileage and replace wearable parts, some of which I listed, and the Expedition required a drivers side window assembly and rear blower motor about 5k miles later. My wife's new 2012 Optima 2.0T has required nothing but gas and oil for the past 40k miles. I buy used, too, but I have never bought a used vehicle that did not require something and I have had a lot of vehicles over the years, 20-25, some new but mostly used. I even bought an 07 Shelby I bought off the showroom floor that cost me more than the payment because, well, I just couldn't leave well enough alone.
Extended warranties? Well, those are jokes salesmen play on you so they can pay their rent. Since 2000, I've had one warranty that was worth the money on a '96 Z-28 that required all the lifters and the water pump to be replaced. It cost me only a crisp $100 bill, plus the $2500 warranty of course.

Of course it COULD cost you more. Eventually it should because you are buying a vehicle with 50-200k miles on it. That should cost more down the line than buying new with <100 miles on it. That being said, if you can save 20-30k buying used thats a hell of a lot of replacement parts for a vehicle.

Just make sure the rust issue is not affecting the cab, especially in the mount are.
I have an 04 Screw FX4 and just had the cab corners done with repainting there, rockers and the entire box including the tailgate and the rear bumper. I got a deal on it cause the guy is a friend but I am happy with the decision. With the money I saved not buying a newer truck I just bought a used set of wheels and tires (to be seen soon). They will also require a little work to be perfect but again a huge savings of cash that can be used elsewhere.

Wow you can buy 17 acres for the price of a truck? I live in a rural area but 17 acres is still quite a bit more than a new truck. Maybe you got a good neighbor discount..... And I agree you made the right call. Price of land will always go up, they don't make it anymore, truck will depreciate.
