Default Brakes freeze

I live up in Maine and was driving around in a snow storm that was really cold out, I went to stop and had no brakes with a hard pedal then a loud pop and they were there. Then it did it again when I had it parked and running while plowing with my other truck and got back in to move it and it did the same thing.. I assume it was alot of ice build up on the calipers, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem??
Oh ya mine is a 06 5.4 but same as all 04-up 4x4 s 4-wheel disc

How cold was it? I would think calipers would be able to pretty much clear snow instantly when engaged...I haven't had that problem before and I imagine we live in somewhat similar climates..
