Steel wool is a NoNo! Use a good wheel cleaner from Armor All, Eagle One, Surf City Garage. Clean the wheels when they are cool. Don't use anything with an abrasive compound. Don't use carnuba wax on your wheels, it will cause the brake dust to stick to the chrome, use a chrome sealer if you want.

I agree, however it was the only thing that worked for me, the chemical sprays still didn't get it all off and I found they dried out/cracked the tires. That said, aluminum rims don't last long up here, two or three winters at best....so ford eventually replaced them for me under their corrosion warranty. The new rims were steel backed with some kind of chrome cover on them...and I got aftermarket pads...and they clean off real easy.
