Here's my solution... These pics suck, but it shows that it works... I had peeling paint and rust starting prior to this fix. I cut the peeled paint off with a razor, sanded, rust converter primed, painted, then RTV. I laid the RTV high in the problem area to help "pitch" the water out, but it still pools..

Its not beautiful, but you can't tell I did it with the door closed so who cares. Its still better then rust and peeling paint..

Notice the first pic shows a slight drip trail from water pooling..

Maybe you should focus on washing your truck more hahahaha

Just kidding. My rust is just at the rim of the door so probably similar to what you had. Nothing visible when the door is shut. I will look at doing the same thing as you before it gets worse. Good post. This is the first I have ever read about anyone doing anything about the rust in that area.

I'd say its definitely a common rust area. Both my brother's trucks have something similar as well. I wonder why more cars don't have it?

Just for fun I asked the body shop how much to replace the whole bed. Around $6000. Sure.

I washed and spray waxed just before the last tiny storm the other day. I probably have a good 5 pounds of sand clinging all over my truck in those pics.. They sand and salt the New England area like the worlds coming to an end.

Once you see that cancer starting, you got to nip it in the bud. I caught mine before it was really bad, pretty much right when it started peeling the paint. The water stays under the paint peel and rusts that metal very quickly..

I'm sort of leaning towards just letting it go for now. It's just cosmetic. And considering its made it through 8 years of Wisconsin winters, I'd say its put up quite a fight. I'll still shop around for estimates though, if I find something reasonable then maybe I'll get it fixed.

Ideally I'd like to replace the whole bed I think.
