What about adding a drain hole in the gas cap cavity? Or is there already one? I haven't checked. But maybe it would help. I don't want water staying in that area.

I have slight rust around the bed-side where the door touches.

It would have to be a decent size hole for it to drain correctly, but then a hole in the metal will end up causing rust. Plus you might see the hole just under the door, even when its closed. Take a look in there next time it rains, you will see what I mean.

I'll try and get some photos this morning before work.

This may be a stupid question but what makes a write up? Or what's the difference from a "regular" thread?

I would look for a whole bed on better condition and swap it out. No doubt. Even if you have to drive to the bed and swap it right there.

A note to all f150 owners: the gas tank area rusts! Nobody's exempt from this... Water pools inside the door and gets under the paint... Get some RTV black silicone and glaze this area with some q tips... If your rusting already: sand the paint down, prime it 3 times, paint it with a q tip, then RTV the entire bottom half of the door... I saw it on every (like 30) f150's I test drove before I bought mine. After this procedure, I've had no paint chipping or rusting issues develop...
I'm exempt. My quarters are made out of rubber.

Rubber quarters? I'm talking about the gas door location, not the rear quarters. Or maybe I'm just not picking up what your putting down..

The entire outer bedsides are rubber. I think it's just the 5.5 flareside.
