As far as I know.. no. There are plenty of people running yellow tops as the main battery in their car.

I've had the same yellow top for 7 years now.......

I had it in my 94 cougar which was a 4,000 car and 6,000 stereo- never hurt the alternator...

I had it in my 94 Explorer- again no alternator issues...

Put it in my truck the day I got it, 10/4/06- 60,000 miles later- still no issues.

In fact as a diesel tech- I would argue that it doesn't matter.

Your alternator does not make the batteries energy... it maintains it. a deep cycle battery does not lose energy as easily as a standard battery, thus reducing the need for the alternator maintaining the system voltage...

oh alright. well maybe ill think about getting a yellow top as my next battery. i was thinking, since i dont have any addons that draw power, just getting a red top.. do you think that would have the longevity of a yellow?.. sorry OP for going off topic

I don't know what size compressor to run. Something to fill tires and possibly an air horn. If it there is a setup our there to run pnuematic tools then I would be interested in that. I figure I would need a tank too.

As for my OP, I'll be looking into a yellow top battery or a second battery instead of upgrading the alternator. There's no way I would do the second battery if I couldn't mount it under the hood.

You could look at airbagit.com for compressor and tank kits. Granted, they are website mainstreamed for air ride setups, the compressors and tanks would be the same..
