Default Best ways to remove carbon build up

I took my truck in to have a bad ball joint replaced and the shop called and said I had carbon build up on my throttle body. They told me I could have it cleaned with a fuel system treatment for over $100. I told them I would pass and take care of it later. Do y'all have any experience removing carbon build up? What did y'all use? I know I can clean the throttle body with cleaner but did y'all run a fuel system treatment too? I've used one before but I don't really know how much it does to clean the carbon build up

Newer (2006 ???? & newer) throttle bodies have a coating on them and (according to the service manual) the use of throttle body cleaners are not recommended. I used a slightly damp towel and the carbon came off of my throttle body. As a safety precaution, disconnect the electrical connection to a motorized throttle body to prevent the throttle body from inadvertently chopping off your finger(s) while cleaning.

I'm pretty sure the CRC throttle body cleaner is safe on coated TBs. I've used it on coated TBs for years with no problems. I cleaned my truck's TB with it a and a soft, lint-free cloth. I also use CRC MAF cleaner. I bought a kit of both products at WallyWorld.

Thank y'all! I just thought $124 or whatever was a rip off. I'll clean the throttle body myself with some CRC throttle body cleaner and find a good fuel treatment!

What the 100$ service is, it's called a BG fuel system service it's worth it in my opinion we do it at our dealership quite often and have seen proven results, you do need to do it more then once tho!

Keyword "DEALERSHIP"...We here @ F150 Forum hate the dealership, but we do love the free coffee when we have a TSB to take care of.
