the fuel system on this truck is a returnlless system.. the fuel pump driver module is controled by the pcm and regulates ground to the fuel pump itself , the pump is capable of producing over 100 psi but the truck runs on 30 to 40 on the fuel rail is a fuel rail pressure sensor that tells the pcm how much fuel pressue is in the rail if the fuel filter is plugged the pcm will ramp up the pump motor to over come low pressue extened high pump usage against a plugged fuel filter can damage the pump

This is the explanation that my buddy gave me. Gonna try to get to it this week and try out the fresh gas. Too busy racing sleds on the weekends.

I haven't seen anything as to why you think the fuel filter was plugged up though? What makes you say it was clogged?

When I changed the filter the fuel that came out of it was very dark gray in color and appeared to have some pieces of dirt or something in it so I assumed it was plugging up. I am going to drain the tank tomorrow and hopefully get this all worked out.

Well I have been cycling the key and got about 5 gallons out. Found out the fuel pump relay is soldered into the board. Noticed the fuel pump noise changes. Sometimes it is a light humming noise and other times it sounds like a small dremel tool grinding on something just not as loud. I think this is a sign of a bad fuel pump. Gas coming out is not dirty and doesn't have a bunch of water in it.

That will always happen. 100% normal. If you pull the filter out of any vehicle on the road the filter will have that stuff in it.

I expected some dirt but not the fuel in the filter and in the line after the filter to be dark gray almost black. I bought a new, just the fuel pump and not the assembly, on ebay today for $25 and free shipping. It's a motorcraft pump and comes with a warranty. Has anyone ever changed just the pump before?

I am guessing you have another vehicle to drive and it's not an inconvenience to let your truck sit? It's been almost a month, there's no way my truck could be down that long

Yeah I have a Ranger to get back and forth to work. I bought this truck to pull my sled trailer. I race snowmobiles on the weekend and tinker with them throughout the week so it doesn't allow much time to work on the truck. Plus the down time of waiting on parts that I order online adds up, first the two coil packs, then the FPDM, and now the pump itself. Supposed to be here by this weekend so hopefully I get it going next week.

Alright I've had it with this truck. New fuel pump did not do anything to fix this problem. Runs the same, stalls, ticks and pops. Only code coming up is a P0171. I'm taking it to the local garage and going to have them look at it and see if they can fix it. After that I'm trading it in on a diesel. I'm done with it.
