Default Bad vibration around 45-55 MPH

Hey guys,

I've been having a tough time with my truck having a nasty vibration as I go down the highway. It starts kinda small and works it's way up to where the entire truck feels and looks like it is going to fall apart. I've replaced CV axles, brake calipers, balanced my tires twice, and taken the driveshaft off to check its balance, it's still good. I was originally thinking something in the steering next, but when I had the rear off the ground in the shop and ran it up to 55 it still does it. I'm just having a tough time with it because up to this point it's been a great truck. I guess a description would help, 2005 Crew cab Lariat, 5.4 L, 124,000 miles. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What makes you say that? I saw this thread having the same issue. Curious if a u joint has more resonance at that speed?

The faster u go it will begin to vibrate worse, you can check them by grabbing drive shaft at rear end and check for play up and down, same for the other end at tranny

I have checked those too. There doesn't appear to be any play in either end. I heard something about a rubber bushing around the end by the transmission. Could that have something off with it and be causing this problem?

Examine your parking brake. It may be the culprit if it's a little too snug

Default That shudder vibration maybe misfires

Mine feels like that when shes missing with a bad cop . Have you changed plugs
yet . It doesn't like to set a code until it stays for longer than 20 seconds at a time .

2 suggestions for you... seems like you've isolated that it's in the rear end, correct? The parking brakes is a good place to start (as mentioned above), mine were rusted to the inside of the rear rotor when I took them off! Have a big hammer ready! Second, while you've got the truck up, check the pinion bearing for any play. Movement in/out or up/down could be causing your vibration.

I think I will start with the parking brake. I just has the pinion seal replace about 5 months ago, so it should be fine. The parking brake on the other hand did throw up a red flag the other day. Went to put it on and the pedal went all the way to the floor with no resistance. Could something have come loose and that's what is happening?

I replaced my plugs about 30,000 miles ago, but I will look into that. I had one boot that was bad right out of the box.

If it went to the floor, the parking brake cable probably came off the actuator at the hub. It sounds like you located your problem. You don't even have to jack the truck up to check that out, the cable is fully visible on the back of the hub. Check out this photo (LINK) to see what I mean.
