Not too difficult a concept for backup camera's to work. You simply need to decide first what the camera will be used for; to backup only, or to be able to view behind the vehicle any time you want, such as when you are pulling a trailer.

If backing up only, then the perfect solution is to power the camera off of the reverse light circuit, and if the head unit has a "trigger" wire/lead, that too is wired to the reverse power lead. This trigger lead is what the head unit uses to immediately switch the monitor over to the camera; when you place the vehicle out of reverse, the monitor resumes its display of the other function it was in before you shifted into reverse.

If you want the camera to be on any time you want, then a 12V power lead when the vehicle is in the run mode works to power the camera. The trigger wire becomes the trick: wiring the trigger lead to an on/off toggle switch can work (to 12 v source), or the head unit has an option to disable the trigger lead all together, and you have to select the camera mode on your head unit manually. Best to read the operating manual of the radio to determine how that part can work.

Here's a thread detailing a couple of us doing this install.. Mines a few pages in and shows pics of the exact wires to use to get the camera with a constant ignition hot 12v signal, and the reverse trigger circuit all integrated.. So you can watch the view from the camera going forward, and have it still kick on when reverse selected.. I keep my camera on display through my headunit all the time. I love it, and backing up is unbelievably easy.. With a little time and practice, you will be able to back up to anything with less than a 16th of an inch between the obstacle and the bumper..
