Default axle seal

so i took my 04 in for an oil change and tire rotation today and they told me that my rear, passenger side, axle seal is shot. the truck has about 92k miles (i know, its a lot). is this just normal wear and tear? has anyone else had this problem and know how much it might cost? they didn't give me an estimate

your diff breather is probably plugged, thats what happened to my old 05. one seal went out with only 35000 miles on it. Ford warrentied it and did both for me. you're probably out of warrenty with 92000 on it. shouldn't cost too much to fix. new seal, new gear oil and labour. If you feel comfortable and have a chiltons near by, you may want to attempt it yourself.

ok thanks, i probably wont do it myself so hopefully it wont be too expensive, they told me the bearing may have to be replaced too. Where is the diff breather? how can i unplug it?

my bearings were ok. the diff breather is a small fitting that is screwed into the axle tube on the driver's side i believe. on the fitting you'll see a hose attached to it and running up to the box of the truck. either the hose or the fitting is plugged. just unscrew the fitting from the axle tube and blow it and the hose out. mine was plugged with snow that had melted and then froze.
