Anyone pay their Ford dealer to change plugs?
Hi kids.
Just picked up a 2004 XLT with a 5.4 that has 68000 miles on it. After a little reading I learn about the dreaded spark plug removal problem.
Do you guys think it's worth $285 to just let the dealer change the plugs and be done with it?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Yeah if it was only 285 total it would be a GREAT deal! But they charge a **** tone for every plug that breaks and they can say all 8 break for all you know.

Bring the breaking up to the service manager and get it in WRITING that there will be no extra charge (fat chance this will happen but worth a try)...

$285 would be a steal. When my 05 FX4 with 72k got a misfire on the #8, the dealer recommended that I change the COP on that cylinder, change the rest of the COP boots, and change all the spark plugs. They quoted me somewhere around $850 for all that, with the addition that if they broke any plugs, it would be $159 for the first one and $59 for any other plugs they broke. I told them to go eff themselves, that's the most rediculous crap I've ever heard. Sounded like they were just trying to drum up a little business. I bought the plugs myself, bought 8 new COPs, and me and my Porsche-mchanic friend changed everything out in about 2 hours. Cost me a grand total of $350 for parts and labor (gave my buddy $100 for helping me out) We went slow and never broke a single plug, but they were in there pretty good. Definitely something you have to take your time with, but with the dealer wanting the potential of $1500 for a sparkplug change, I couldn't afford NOT to do it myself. But if they'll do it for $285 man that's a deal.

If you can get it done for $285 after everything is said and done, DO IT! but i would ask first if they are going to charge you for any broken plugs and how much for each broken plug. If they are going to charge for broken plugs shop around and get some more prices from other shops. Or if you know someone with the right tools and knows what they are doing that would be willing to do it, then do it that way. I just changed mine at 74000km and i was fortunate to just break one of them. The job took me about and hour and a half to 2 hours total.
