Default Anyone know what Yellow Wrench Display is. First Ford Truck

I have a 2004 5.4 , F-150 Super Crew. 40K miles. Has been great. Last night when I started it up , the yellow wrench light on display appeared. It stayed on for my ride home. 20mins.. seemed to run fine. I got home turned engine off and turned back on.. No light.. this morning drove another 15 miles no light.
Is this something I should worry about? only thing I recently did was changed the oil myself. 5-20 recommended. I used 10-30. this should not have anything to do with it. "yellow wrench" what is this ? thanks

Check Engine Light

Never seen it as a yellow wrench but that's the only concievable thing I can think of that it would be.

It indicates the PCM entered "limp home mode". Here is the description found in an owners manual (great stuff can be found in these!):

Electronic throttle control (if equipped):

Illuminates when the engine has defaulted to a
limp-homeoperation. Report the

fault to a dealer at the earliest opportunity.

There is a seperate check engine light that will light up when a sensor or more sever fault has been detected.

I'll also assume you do not have an owners manual, as it would describe the meaning of this icon in there. Here's a link you can go to to get a copy to download to your PC for free:

https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

Take your truck to a parts store and have them read the OBD II code(s); most do this for free. Then post the code here for more help.

x3...As a side note, on occasion, mine will light up briefly and then go out as well. If the truck is running fine, and the light doesnt stay on, it is likely just a computer hickup, and the ECM had to make an adjustment. It would not be a bad idea to have codes read, though.

thanks for the help. The only thing I have noticed since I had bought the truck a year ago. after starting up , put in drive and idle along w/no throttle. a slight touch to the pedal , the truck engine would be jumpy , almost a pulsating rev , rev. no clue if anyone has ever had this happen. All in all truck runs fine with no issues at all. I suppose if the light comes on again I will have it tested.

just curious why would you use 10w-30 when the truck recommends 5w-20?

I actually spoke to a Ford Dealer about this. No one wants to say 100% this is the right oil to use. But what I know is Marketing and Regulations / Corp Avg. Fuel Economy Tests have shown a better fuel efficiency in using 5-20 oils. as far as engine wear goes it seems to be a topic for discussion. 10-30 oil is recommended vs the 5-20. either way warranties are not compromised. I was told by numerous people run 10-30 , not 5-20. the fuel economy difference is not at all noticeable to the average every day driver. But 10-30 offers much better long term protection. I am no mechanic but did hear this from many people.

hm i would have thought the opposite, i think these engines have tighter tolorerances and you could use a different oil because it would do more harm them good, but maybe im wrong maybe someone with more experience will chime in
