I have a winch in the bed of the truck. I use it to haul in garden tractors, tillers etc. Makes the job of getting heavy things into the truck bed a lot easier.

I mounted a trailer hitch ball in the rear center of the bed (close to the cab rear). I then use the electric winch, with the ball hitch receiver unit mounted to the bottom of the winch. Slip it over the ball and your ready to haul stuff. I have the winch wired into the truck so all I have to do is plug it in when I need it. After I'm done with it I store it back behind the seat.

I responded to a post like this not too long ago entitled "winches".

I suggested the Hidden Warn winch for the F150. It bolts behind the factory bumper, and uses all exising holes, no drilling. When its on, all you can see is the hook sticking out. Awesome.

The kit comes with a 9500# short-drum winch. I think I saw it for $1300 complete somewhere.

I agree that you should go heavier on a winch than you'll ever think you'll need. You can never have too much. A 12,000# would certainly be unstoppable. But my buddy has a new Dodge power-wagon, that came from the factory with a 12000# winch, and that truck weighs around 6600#. A 9500# winch is more than sufficient for an F150, weighing 5300# or so.

As far as how often people use them. Well... Its like 4wd. Many people lived without it for many years, but then they got their first one, and use it constantly, and would probably be lost without it. In other words, if you have a winch, you will attempt to do things that you'd never dream of doing before you had the winch, and you "WILL" get stuck, and therefore you "WILL" use the winch!!

I will not be doing the kind of off roading that would require a winch, not any place around me that I could if I wanted,

I am thinking more for pulling shrubs and such out of the ground around me, if someone is stuck in the snow I can help get them out and small things.

If you're not using it for self recovery, you might be better served by a standard winch bolted to a receiver plate. That way, you could attach it to your trailer hitch, and take it off when it isn't needed.

As for the Warn hidden kit, I'll probably be doing that soon. I don't go off-road unless it's to help someone else out, but I have been stuck in the dark, in places where my cell-phone doesn't work. It's times like that when $1300 doesn't seem like alot of money!!!
