I think I have the same issue, but it only happens intermittently. If I had to describe the sound, I would say it is like a chain rubbing against a metal surface. It reminds me of the noise that a bicycle chain would make if it rubbed against the chain guard. It is a raspy metallic noise. I have not figured out a pattern - it just happens. The noise does not change pitch with transmission speed changes (for instance if I downshift but don't change my road speed.) I have noticed a "clunk" sound sometimes when it stops. Does this sound like the 4wd control problem?

I realize this is quite an old thread, but I am having the exact same symptoms in the 2006 FX4 that I bought used just over a month ago. Does anyone know exactly what the problem was? I'm looking at replacing the IWE solenoid because I have the old style without the shroud, but from what I could tell from reading other posts that issue seemed to cause a grinding. My noise is more like a bicycle chain rubbing the chain guard and it only happens when I accelerate (but not every time). The noise most often happens when accelerating slightly (feathering) at low speeds up an incline.
