I bought my own parts, new Motorcraft coils and spark plugs. So all I owed him was for labor, and he charged me $550.00. So with the price of the parts and the labor, this tune up cost me close to $1000.00.

Cool, hope you kept the receipts. You can probably get in on that class-action suit that just got mailed out to everyone.

Yes, I made copies of everything and even sent copies of the pictures I posted to this thread, got it out in the mail yesterday evening.I know this was an expensive tune up ,but after picking the truck up and listening to what my mechanic buddy told me,I knew I did not want any part of that. But that's new and late model vehicles for you. Give me a car or truck with a carburetor and a point type distributor in it ,and I can keep it running like new. When I was in high school I had a 1967 Mustang GT with a 390 engine and 4 speed transmission. That engine was practically shoe-horned into the engine compartment, almost no room at all. But I would take a 3/8 drive ratchet with no extension and the required 13/16" spark plug socket and change the plugs in about 30 minutes. Sure you don't have tune them up as often but new and late model vehicles are not designed for the home mechanic, they want you to have to bring them to the shop for maintenance and repairs so they can hit you with these high priced labor rates.

He charged you $550 for labor, where did the other 450 come from? Lets say your plugs were 100, are coils really $350 for the 5.4?

The coils and plugs were $375.00, that plus his labor tab comes to $925.00, so I didn't miss that $1000.00 mark by much.

Just a bit of correction here, you can't buy a set of eight Motorcraft coils anywhere for $40.00. If you know of somewhere that sells Motorcraft coils that cheap, please let me know and I'll buy all they have at that price.

Ditto.

Sounds like a price for plugs, not coils.

I have an '04...it's a highway/garage queen (not my daily driver) and only has 68K on the engine.

It's running fine, but I've been dreading the spark plug change whenever the time comes. I've left it alone...if it 'aint broke don't fix it, right?

Then about a week ago I get the class action notice in the mail. So I reckon I should do it now and get it over with. I'm not going to bother doing it myself, I'll take it to a well regarded shop here in Denver.

So it's legit, eh? I wonder if anyone has actually received payment...perhaps I should search the threads.
