Am I missing something, or are 20" tires cheaper than 18"s?

Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe it's a good market for 20 inch tires right now, but comparing prices on factory sized 20 inch tires for my 2007 FX4 (275/55-20) with factory sized 18's (275/65-18), it seems like 20's are quite a bit cheaper.
Is this because the 18's aren't as common?
Are 20's typically cheaper than 18's?

I've been told by the owner of the local tire shop when I was looking for tires that tires for a 20 are cheaper. He said they are cheaper because you see more people with 20s than you do 18s. That a 18 inch rim is just a weird size was his words. Because I couldn't believe how much a set of 285s was for a 18.

Yeah basically a 20" is becoming more common throughout the auto market.
I've even noticed it while looking for new tires for my 18s. I'm wanting a really wide 33 cuz I can't fit anything taller, but unless you are trying to stuff 35s or bigger the 18" market is slim pickings but 20" 33x12.50 there are tons!

I've not broke down and bought a new set yet, I have the most trouble finding used 18s. About a year and a half ago I priced out nitto terra grapplers and they were 1200 even kumho all terrains were 1200 a couple months ago. Everytime I find a used set people want a arm and a leg for 1/4 tread tires!

idk, in my opinion 20s should be cheeper as a standard.. your getting the same overall diameter but much less sidewall as 18s. Much more rubber in the 18s.

When i was looking a 18" rim/tire package was alot less than a 20" rim/tire package. My 35" tires were 469.99 each and the 20" rims were 269.99 a peice while 18s were all under 200

Has very little to do with the amount of materials used and everything to do with supply and demand. The size is also a huge factor. An 18 in a weird size will always be more than a common 20 size.

hancook makes a relatively cheap all terrain tire in an 18 size. Its the dynapro atm. I have had them and they are pretty tough and last a long time. They are currently $182 a piece on discount tire. Mine are the stock size for an fx4. 275/65/18
