Default Almost kills engine

Sometimes when I shift from drive to neutral or to park, my idle will go really low and almost die. Any ideas on where to start looking?

Also have the rough idle, and ticking. I guess that is a different story. How will I narrow things down if it is the timing, or something else?

Cleaned the MAF? Fuel Filter dirty? Mileage on plugs? Any CELs?

MAF is cleaned

Never looked at the fuel filter, where is it, on frame?

I have changed out all 8 cops, and changed the passenger plugs.

No check engine light.

Fuel filter is on Driver's side rail. You will need the removal tool to change it out, good practice to change about 12-15K miles. Also, have you checked the FPDM module, the old ones corrode really bad. Its located on the crossmember behind the spare tire. You need to drop the spare and look at it, if it is still mounted flush with the crossmember, you probably have the old one. They have been know to crumble when they are taken off, the new ones have spacers under them between the module and the crossmember to prevent the corrosion.

A corroded or bad FPDM wouldnt cause your idle to drop low. As far as I know (and I could be wrong) it would shut down the engine completely. Try cleaning your throttle body, it has caused a rough idle in my truck on numerous occasions.

Did you remove the throttle body to clean it?? I was having problems with my idle dropping to low, and I finally totally removed my throttle and cleaned the whole thing (there was lots of build up on the bottom of my throttle body) and it's been running like a top 2,000 miles later

I removed mine also. I'm going to try the fuel filter next and check the FPDM just in case

What tool is needed for removing the fuel filter? I have a few of the ford tools, just not sure what size.

Would my possible cam phaser issue cause rough idle or the idle dropping almost killing the engine when you shift from drive to neutral or park?
