A Gryphon is an Edge Evo that has been reflashed to different firmware by PHP (power hungry performance). After that, they are able to make custom tunes to load on there. Cosmetically the Edge is grey, the gryphon is black.

countryman, i dont know about the others but i ordered a hyper tech power programmer online and they sent me one for a 5.4 and i have a 4.6, i called customer service and they pretty much said tuff luck, i still have it sitting around but i wanna sell it. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DOSE NOT CARE ABOUT THE CUSTOMER! just as long as they get their money.....enough about that.
so if i dont want anything super special i should get the evo? i just want it to look nice and add some ponys for a good price. i know i wont get anywhere near the 35hp they advertise but a little hp would be nice to add to my stock parts....

Am I reading this right? Are you complaining about choices?? haha Personally, I have an Edge Evo. I read good things from people that had them, I like the option of upgrading to a gryphon if one day I need custom tunes, and I got a real deal from a guy on this forum. FWIW, I know it works for the 5.4 & the 4.6. I have also heard good things about the SCT xcal3, however I don't have one. For more info, check out the sticky in Aftermarket Parts

Keeblerz28, do you have trouble with yours giving a blank screen every now and then? I have the edge evo and I just unplug it and it works fine when the screen goes blank, but resets the avg mileage. Also, seems to limit reverse to 1500 rpms, no more. I actually got in a bind one time due to this.

I didn't notice a big kick in power with the edge evo, but did notice better fuel economy and firmer transmission shifts. Made it worth it for me.

It gave me a blank screen once... but I had left my headlights & radio on for awhile. I just figured it had something to do with that, it's been fine since. I haven't noticed there was a limit in reverse with or without the Evo. Typically I don't need to do 40 in reverse though, haha

I would suggest making sure you're updated to the latest firmware and calibrations on your Evo.

There are so many tuners that claim this and that. I used to run a hypertech back in the day, i guess it worked, right now i am running a diablo predator. i like the edge i had because of the ability to have up to date tranny temps, fuel mileage, rpm. some tuners you just plug in and remove. if i am gonna spend 400 bucks, i want it to be a little more useful digital gauges are great to have, that to me is worth the extra cash vs the competition. if you can have your truck dyno tuned with the mods you got, that would be your best bet. i plan on doing this to my next project after the motor swap. will tune your truck exactly and yield you the most hp. depending on where you live, sometimes a dyno tune is only around 200 bucks.

All i gotta say guys is custom tunes all the way.. I had the edge and then upgraded it to the gryphon and then got my custom tunes and its 10 times better then just the standard programmer IMO.

Yep for sure and a dyno tune is even better. only downfall is you have to pick which one, no switching, unless you run 2 or 3 computers and swap them in and out.
