air intake or tuner?
I have a 04 5.4 4x4 111,000. I looking for more mpg/power gain. I have been told to do air intake 1st. What should I do? I only have $400 to play with.

1. NO power gains from a CAI/WAI.
2. You simply cannot run an intake safely on a 3V without custom tuning to correct for MAF TF skew.
3. CAI/WAI is a total waste of money on this truck.
A Clear choice.

Tuner, as others have said. Once I tuned my truck for 93 Octane Performance, my highway mileage went from 13 to 16.5 and the improved throttle response is unbelievable.

Arguably it's the tune itself that matters the most. My tune is from Power Hungry. I'm using the SCT X4. I do like its features. Even without a tune, I can alter a whole bunch of settings (but I don't because I don't feel confident with that just yet).

I recently pulled a AFE CAI and a cheap performance chip off of my 06 (I bought it with these mods). It immediately fixed most of the performance and economy issues that it had. I hope to add a programmer sometime soon.
I think many people add a CAI because it looks bad a** but don't realize that there is a bit more to it than simply bolting it on.
